"Meeting Writeups"

Dear Fellow Toastmasters & Guests,

Thank you for being with us yesterday for Shah Alam Toastmasters Club meeting themed ‘Merry X’mas’.

We would be delighted if you can join us for our next meeting on
Date:   11th January 2011 (Tuesday)
Time:   8.00 pm
Venue: Bilik Gombak, Kelab Shah Alam, Selangor

Interested role players and speakers, please get in touch with our President Zaharah Ibrahim as she will be our next Toastmaster of the Evening. Puan Zaharah can be contacted at zaharah_ac2@yahoo.com, 019-385 4885.

Special thanks to these people who made our meeting yesterday so wonderful:
1.                     Zaini, Zuraida, Ariff and Hafiza for being our guests. Do visit us again and consider joining as members of Toastmasters so that you too can GROW as speakers. Congrats to Zaini for stepping forward to give his first ever Table Topics speech!
2.                   Zulfarham and Xavier for giving their AWESOME speeches. GO, guys! We look forward to your next speech. Xavier was also our Grammarian – this talented young man is indeed a speaker to behold!
3.                   Elizabeth for the heartfelt invocation speech about LOVE. Let’s spread the love to our loved ones this season of joy… Not forgetting the peanuts and yummy fruit cake slices that Elizabeth brought for us to eat. Much thanks!
4.                   Haridas for agreeing to deliver an impromptu Humor session, though his jokes are always on the borderline. We hope to see Haridas attend club meetings more often – we always enjoy his company!
5.                   Zulfarham for being such a diligent Toastmaster of the Evening. WELL DONE, Zul!
6.                   Lawrence for double hatting as ‘Ah Counter’ and ‘Speech Evaluator’. Multi tasking is quite common in Shah Alam Toastmasters, but the best thing is by doing that, you grow all the more as a speaker.
7.                   Sarah Abedi for her eloquence and flair in presiding over the meeting in the absence of our President. Sarah, as usual, you rocked! As Table Topics Master, Sarah invoked in all of us the true X’mas spirit!
8.                   Victor Ong for coming down to our club to perform his role as GE and giving us such useful insights in his evaluation. We are deeply honored that you sacrificed your Taman Indrahana TM club meeting to be with us at Shah Alam Toastmasters!
9.                   Last but not least, to our beautiful Sergeant At Arms, Phing Phing (also Miss Timer), for arranging the logistics of the club meeting. The ‘kuey tiaw goreng’ was a first and the meal break was truly a delicious feast.

Each of us went home with a X’mas gift last nite, but the most treasured gift was undoubtedly your participation in the meeting. By deciding to spend the two hours or so with us at Shah Alam Toastmasters, you grow every time as a speaker. As said by World Champion Speaker, Darren LaCroix, “Any day you don’t get up on stage, you don’t grow, so go on Grab that STAGE TIME!”
Come visit us again, ya!

Thanks & Regards,

Humorous Speech Contest

District 51 Humourous Speech and Evaluation Contest 2010/2011
31 October 2010, Saturday
This past weekend, was the 1st time I attended a District Level contest and it was indeed an eye opener. For those new to Toastmasters, these contests begin at the club level. Winners then proceed through area, division, and district contests. Ten contestants took part in the District 51 Humorous Speech contest. The Champion, Ooi Ing Chyuan, spoke about “Dealing with Flatulence’. I must say Ooi’s choice of topic was very delicate but he tastefully delivered it! Some of his quips were simply outrageous to our ears. He turned the house upside down with his hilarious personal experiences. The 1st runner up, Zarina Mustafa, gave a speech about ‘Manglish’ and kept us transfixed with her beautiful vocal variety and was brilliant as she intertwined Chinese and Tamil quips in her speech. Her strong points were good diction and clear pronunciation. The Humorous Speech contest was indeed side-splitting well worth the price of admission.
After morning tea break, the Speech Evaluation Contest came on. District 51 showed off its clubs' best evaluators that day in a fun, energetic and efficiently run contest. Ten contestants participated in the contest. The contests began on a serious note, as evaluator contestants gave reasoned and encouraging feedback to speaker, Stephen Fernando, on his test speech "One More Day", reminding us to appreciate the precious time that we have on this Earth. Years of Toastmasters training in giving constructive evaluations paid off for these contestants. The champion Muthukumaran Kodiappen’s evaluation to me was the most memorable and deserving of the recognition bestowed upon him as the best of the best. This was another exciting event, with new examples of evaluation excellence and another opportunity to watch maestros delivering their speeches.

Below are the photos taken of the winners. Wish you were there!
